Overview
Illinois regulates falconry through the Department of Natural Resources. The state requires all falconers to obtain a falconry permit and follow both state and federal regulations. Illinois recognizes three classes of permits: Apprentice, General, and Master, each with specific requirements for experience, raptor possession limits, and facility standards. All applicants must pass an examination and maintain approved housing facilities. The state follows federal guidelines in 50 CFR 21 for raptor care, marking, and reporting requirements.
Apprentice
Requirements for beginning falconers. Typically includes 2 years of apprenticeship, sponsorship by a general or master falconer, and basic housing standards.
General
Requirements for intermediate falconers. Requires at least 2 years as an apprentice and allows for a wider selection of species and multiple birds.
Master
Requirements for advanced falconers. Requires at least 5 years of experience as a general falconer and allows the maximum number of birds and species.
License Information
Illinois issues three classes of falconry permits: Apprentice (minimum age varies, requires sponsor), General (requires experience as Apprentice), and Master (requires additional years as General falconer). Each class has specific possession limits for raptors. Apprentice falconers are limited to one bird and must have a sponsor who is a General or Master falconer. Exam Information
All new applicants for Illinois falconry permits must successfully pass a written examination demonstrating knowledge of falconry practices, raptor biology, care and handling, relevant laws and regulations, and conservation principles. Housing Requirements
Illinois requires all falconers to maintain approved facilities for housing raptors. Facilities must be inspected and approved before a permit is issued. Housing must meet federal standards in 50 CFR 21 and provide adequate space, protection from weather and predators, proper perching, and sanitary conditions. Both indoor facilities (mews) and outdoor facilities (weathering areas) must comply with size, construction, and safety specifications. All facilities are subject to periodic inspection by the Department.
Equipment Requirements
Illinois falconers must comply with federal equipment requirements including proper jesses, leashes, swivels, and other necessary gear for raptor handling and training. All raptors must be marked with federal leg bands or microchips as required by federal law. Equipment must be appropriate for the size and species of raptor and maintained in good condition to ensure bird safety and welfare.
